About the resort

🏔️ History
Located in Iwate Prefecture, Appi Kogen is one of Japan's largest and most iconic luxury ski resorts, built during the economic bubble of the 1980s. Its instantly recognizable bright yellow, futuristically designed tower hotel stands in stark contrast to the surrounding pristine wilderness, evoking the golden age of Japanese skiing.

☀️ Best days
January and February. Appi is famous for its "Aspirin Snow"—an exceptionally dry, fine, and lightweight powder with minimal moisture content. Freezing temperatures keep the groomers in world-class condition for months.

🚫 Days to avoid
Japanese long weekends and the New Year holidays. Despite its massive size, the main arterial runs and the central resort complex can become heavily crowded with domestic tourists and large tour groups.

💡 Community tip
Appi is renowned for boasting some of the longest and widest uninterrupted groomers in Japan, making it the ultimate destination for high-speed, wide-arc carving. Recently, they have relaxed their strict off-piste rules, opening up incredible controlled tree-run zones (magic forest sections). Be sure to soak in the massive alkaline hot springs (Shirokaba Onsen) after a long day.
