About the resort
🏔️ History
Conceived in the 1960s on a high cliff overlooking Morzine in Haute-Savoie, Avoriaz is a masterpiece of avant-garde alpine architecture, famous for its towering red-cedar-clad buildings designed to blend into the rocky landscape. It was a pioneer of the 100% pedestrian, ski-in/ski-out concept: the streets are literally snow-covered pistes, and the only transport is horse-drawn sleighs. It serves as the high-altitude heart and central crossroads of the massive cross-border Portes du Soleil network.
☀️ Best days
Crisp, sunny days in January or February after a fresh snowfall. Its high base elevation (1,800m) ensures the village is completely blanketed in white, creating a true winter wonderland aesthetic. The nearby Lindarets valley offers fantastic powder tree runs before you pull into one of its famously excellent rustic restaurants for lunch.
🚫 Days to avoid
French school holidays coupled with windy or poor-visibility days. Because it acts as the primary hub connecting the French and Swiss sectors (like Les Crosets), the bottlenecks at strategic lifts (like Mossettes or Fornet) can be highly frustrating. On flat-light or foggy days ("jour blanc"), the open, high-altitude terrain loses all contrast, making navigation quite confusing.
💡 Community tip
Avoriaz is the undisputed European capital of snowboarding and freestyle. It is home to the legendary "The Stash"—a massive, ecological snowpark completely hidden in the Lindarets forest, built entirely from unvarnished wood in partnership with Burton. Even if you don't jump, skiing through it is incredibly fun. If you are staying in the village, book your arrival horse-sleigh transfer in advance; dragging wheeled suitcases through snow-covered streets is a nightmare.
