Ax 3 Domaines

🏔️ History
Located in the Ariège department, Ax-3-Domaines (originally known as Ax-Bonascre) is one of the largest and most significant ski resorts in the French Pyrenees. Its name comes from the three interconnected domains it spans: Bonascre, Saquet, and Campels. Historically linked to the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes in the valley below, the resort developed in the 1950s and has since modernized, notably connecting the town directly to the slopes via a rapid gondola.

☀️ Best days
Clear days following northwest storm cycles. The Campels sector, with its steeper and less crowded profile, offers long descents and excellent powder in a rugged, wild environment. The panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenean peaks from the Pic de la Tute are spectacular when visibility is high.

🚫 Days to avoid
Sunny weekends in February or during the Toulouse school holiday periods. Because it is the fastest and most accessible major resort to reach by train or car from Toulouse (only 1.5 hours away), it can suffer from severe bottlenecks, both at the valley gondola from Ax-les-Thermes and the base lifts in the Bonascre sector.

💡 Community tip
Take advantage of the valley logistics: you can ski hard at altitude all day and then take the gondola down to the town of Ax-les-Thermes (a 10-minute ride) to soothe your muscles in "Les Bains du Couloubret," a fantastic Roman-style thermal bath complex. For skiing, if there is fresh snow, do not miss the wonderful tree runs through the firs from the Saquet sector down to Bonascre.
