About the resort
🏔️ History
Banff Sunshine Village began in the 1930s as a backcountry cabin for hikers and touring skiers. Its first commercial lift was built in the 1940s. Situated high on the Continental Divide in Banff Park, Sunshine is unique for its high elevation, allowing it to run on 100% natural snow and maintain Canada's longest non-glacial ski season, culminating in the historic Slush Cup in late May.
☀️ Best days
Sunny spring days (March through May) offer the best experience, featuring moderate temperatures and a deep natural snow base. Fresh powder mornings are epic across the three mountains.
🚫 Days to avoid
High-wind storm days in mid-winter. Because much of the terrain sits above the treeline (on Goat's Eye and Lookout Mountain), high winds and whiteouts often trigger lift holds and zero visibility.
💡 Community tip
Advanced skiers equipped with an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe must attempt the legendary Delirium Dive freeride zone. On cold days, visit the historic Mad Trapper's Saloon at the village base for great food and vintage atmosphere.
Nearest Airports
Calgary International Airport
YYC🚗 Driving & Sunshine Access Road: Drive Highway 1 West from Calgary, pass Banff town, and exit for Sunshine Village. Follow the 5-mile (8 km) access road up to the gondola base. The access road is steep and slick; winter tires are highly recommended. A Banff National Park Pass is required.
Local Tips
💡 Ride the free shuttle from Banff: Parking in Banff town and riding Sunshine's free shuttle bus is the easiest and most stress-free option on winter weekends, saving you access road traffic and parking headaches.
