About the resort

🏔️ History
Opened in 1963 by Cliff Serwa and Doug Mervyn, Big White is named after the massive snow-capped mountain dominating British Columbia's Okanagan region. It is historically famous for weather conditions that produce the iconic "snow ghosts" (trees caked in heavy rime and snow) and for developing into one of Canada's premier ski-in/ski-out family resorts.

☀️ Best days
Mid-week days in January and February deliver the driest Okanagan powder. Clear mornings are perfect for photographing the stunning frozen tree formations at the summit.

🚫 Days to avoid
Holiday weekends and school break periods (Christmas and mid-March), when the resort experiences high family traffic and busier village plazas.

💡 Community tip
Staying in ski-in/ski-out lodging is highly recommended at Big White due to the village's layout. For steep terrain and moguls without the crowds, head to the Cliff triple chairlift.

🚗 Driving & Mountain Road: Drive Highway 33 South from Kelowna for 20 miles (32 km), turn onto Big White Road and follow it for 15 miles (24 km) up to the village. Big White Road is a winding mountain road; winter tires are a legal requirement in BC from October to April.

Local Tips

💡 Use the Happy Valley lot: Parking at Happy Valley is highly recommended; it avoids driving village streets and lets you ride Lara's Gondola straight to the village hub.
