About the resort
🏔️ History
Blue Mountain was founded in 1941 by Jozo Weider, a Slovakian immigrant who recognized the potential of the Niagara Escarpment slopes near Collingwood. Weider built the first lift using horse-drawn sleds and steadily expanded the resort. Today, it stands as Ontario's largest and most visited ski destination, offering extensive night skiing and a massive pedestrian village.
☀️ Best days
Mid-week mornings provide clean corduroy and empty lifts. Late afternoons transition into vibrant night skiing under the floodlights in January and February.
🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and Canadian holiday weekends, when the proximity to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) leads to crowded slopes and long lift lines.
💡 Community tip
Park at the South Base Lodge lot to bypass the traffic and parking delays at the main Village. For night skiing, the Orchard sector offers excellent illumination and is typically less crowded.
Nearest Airports
Toronto Pearson International Airport
YYZ🚗 Driving from Toronto: Blue Mountain is Ontario's most popular resort. From Toronto, drive North on Highway 400 to Barrie, then follow Highway 26 West through Collingwood to the resort. Friday afternoon northbound traffic out of the GTA is heavy; plan accordingly.
Local Tips
💡 Enjoy night skiing: As Toronto's primary winter escape, weekends are very busy. Night skiing under the lights is highly popular and offers a great way to avoid daytime peak lift lines.
