About the resort

🏔️ History
Founded in 1961, Breckenridge grew from a modest ski hill into one of Colorado's most iconic resorts. It holds historic significance as the first major Colorado resort to allow snowboarding in 1984. Today, it spans five interconnected peaks (Peak 6 through Peak 10) rising above a historic Victorian gold-mining town.

☀️ Best days
Mid-week days (Tuesday to Thursday) in January and February are ideal for skipping the Denver crowds. Stormy, cold days are perfect for capturing fresh powder in the high alpine bowls of Peaks 6 and 8.

🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and holiday weekends (MLK Day, Presidents' Day) bring massive lift queues and heavy traffic on the I-70 highway. High-wind days often trigger closures of the high-alpine lifts like the Imperial Express.

💡 Community tip
Park for free at the Airport Road lot and ride the free shuttle. Advanced skiers should head straight to Peak 10 or Peak 8's T-Bar, while beginners will love the gentle cruisers on Peak 9. Don't miss a craft beer at Breckenridge Brewery after the lifts close.

🚗 Main access: Drive I-70 West from Denver through the Eisenhower Tunnel, take Exit 203 at Frisco, and follow CO-9 South into Breckenridge. I-70 winter weekend traffic is notoriously congested, especially Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings westbound, and Sunday afternoons eastbound.

⚠️ Mountain conditions: Loveland Pass (US-6) frequently closes due to weather or avalanche mitigation, which reroutes hazardous material trucks through the Eisenhower Tunnel, causing temporary traffic holds.

Local Tips

💡 Altitude safety & traction laws: Breckenridge's base is very high (9,600 ft / 2,926 m). Stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness. Additionally, Colorado's Traction Law requires winter tires, AWD, or chains on the I-70 during snowstorms.
