About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1928, Candanchú is the oldest ski resort in Spain. Located in the Aragonese Pyrenees right next to the Somport border crossing to France, it was a pioneer of winter sports in the Iberian Peninsula, famous for its demanding alpine topography.
☀️ Best days
Late February and March. Candanchú is highly exposed to northern storms, meaning that by late winter it accumulates massive snow bases, and the weather usually clears up to let you enjoy its famous steep faces under the sun.
🚫 Days to avoid
Days with strong northern winds. Its exposed alpine layout means the upper sections (Tuca Blanca and Tobazo) are frequently forced to close for safety during high winds.
💡 Community tip
This is a resort of extreme contrasts: either very easy or very difficult. It boasts one of the best absolute beginner areas in Spain (Pista Grande), while the rest of the mountain is highly technical, packed with steep faces like the legendary "La Zapatilla" or "Loma Verde". If you love challenging, old-school skiing, Candanchú is a must-visit.

🚗 Main access: From Huesca/Zaragoza, take the A-23 motorway to Jaca and continue north on the N-330 national road through the Aragón river valley. Pass through Canfranc, and just before the Somport tunnel (the French border), take the direct turnoff up to the Candanchú resort village, located right at the mountain pass.
⚠️ Winter driving: Although the N-330 is wide and well-cleared, the final climb to the Somport pass is prone to heavy snowfall. The Guardia Civil frequently mandates the use of snow chains or winter tires during storms, so always keep them in your trunk.
Local Tips
💡 Spain's Pioneer: Candanchú is Spain's oldest ski resort (founded in 1928) and boasts a true alpine character. Unlike neighboring Astún, it actually has a village at the base with ski-in/ski-out apartments, hotels, and restaurants. Plus, they share the "100K" joint ski pass and are connected by a 5-minute shuttle bus.
