About the resort
🏔️ History
Famous since the 19th century for its thermal baths that attracted European high society, Cauterets is a historic jewel in the French Pyrenees. Its ski area in the Cirque du Lys was developed later and is renowned today for holding some of the deepest natural snowpacks in the entire mountain range due to a unique microclimate.
☀️ Best days
Any day immediately following a northern storm. The Cirque du Lys acts as a perfect funnel that catches and retains massive amounts of snow, guaranteeing unbeatable powder conditions throughout the winter.
🚫 Days to avoid
Whiteout storm days ("jour blanc"). Because the ski area sits in a treeless glacial cirque, visibility can drop to near zero during heavy snow or fog, making navigation on the slopes extremely disorienting.
💡 Community tip
The ski area base is not located in the village itself; you must take a spectacular gondola ride up to the slopes. Avoid the peak rush hour at the end of the day to skip the lines going back down! After skiing, soothing your muscles in the historic Les Bains du Rocher thermal spa is an absolute must.

Lourdes
Direct transfer available🚗 Main access: From Tarbes/Lourdes, head south on the N21. Pass through Lourdes and follow the valley road (D821) to Pierrefitte-Nestalas. Here begins the final 10 km ascent via the winding D920 road, which snakes up through a narrow gorge to the picturesque town of Cauterets.
⚠️ Chains and parking: The D920 road can be prone to black ice. Winter tires or chains are strictly mandatory under the Loi Montagne (Nov 1st - Mar 31st). Once in town, park your car and get around on foot; to ski, you take the "Lys" gondola right from the town center up to the slopes.
Local Tips
💡 A Charming Town: Cauterets has a vibrant "après-ski" atmosphere due to its size as a proper town, its pedestrian center full of pastry shops (try the local "berlingots"!), and the "Les Bains du Rocher" thermal baths. It's a great base for a car-free holiday.
