🏔️ History
Cerro Bayo is the boutique ski resort of Villa La Angostura, Neuquén. Opened in the 1970s and renovated several times, it has earned its reputation as the quintessential family resort in Argentine Patagonia. Its runs descend with Lago Nahuel Huapi as a backdrop, offering one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Patagonian Andes. With 31 runs and 11 lifts, it is small but extraordinarily scenic.
☀️ Best days
Midweek days in July and August with blue skies over Nahuel Huapi are magical. The 5 km "Camino Panorámico" forest traverse is at its best in August when snow has settled for weeks. Access from Villa La Angostura (9 km) is quick with no congestion on weekdays.
🚫 Days to avoid
Winter holiday weekends in July bring day-trippers from Bariloche (80 km), overwhelming the small car park and creating unusual queues. Rainy days at the base usually mean heavy snow at altitude.
💡 Community tip
Villa La Angostura is one of Patagonia's prettiest villages — a week here combines quality skiing, gourmet dining and uncrowded nature. Lift passes are significantly cheaper than Bariloche/Catedral. The ski school and children's snow garden have an excellent reputation.

🚗 Driving from Bariloche: Cerro Bayo is located just 9km outside the picturesque resort town of Villa La Angostura. The vast majority of visitors fly into Bariloche Airport (BRC) and rent a car there. The 80km drive from Bariloche airport to Villa La Angostura takes about 75 minutes around the incredibly scenic Nahuel Huapi Lake (Route 40). The final drive from Villa La Angostura town up to the ski base takes only about 15 minutes up a gravel access road.
⚠️ Snow Chains: While Route 40 is heavily maintained, the final dirt/gravel access road up to the mountain base can get heavy snow or morning ice. Always ensure your rental car is equipped with snow chains just in case Carabineros (police) or mountain staff require them at the resort turn-off.
Local Tips
💡 Boutique Resort with Incredible Views: Cerro Bayo frequently markets itself as Patagonia's boutique ski resort. The slopes offer some of the most incredible, uninterrupted lake views in South America. Villa La Angostura itself is an upscale town, famous for its wood architecture, excellent dining, and artisan chocolate shops, making it a fantastic romantic choice for couples.
