๐๏ธ History
Cerro Castor, 26 km from Ushuaia in Argentine Tierra del Fuego, holds the title of the world's southernmost ski resort. Opened in 1999 on the slopes of its namesake peak within Tierra del Fuego National Park, it boasts Argentina's longest ski season โ June through October โ thanks to its sub-Antarctic latitude and the moderating influence of the Beagle Channel.
โ๏ธ Best days
August and September offer the best conditions: settled snow, longer days and lighter Patagonian winds. Midweek days in August after a fresh snowfall are the most prized by Ushuaia locals racing to catch the first chairlift.
๐ซ Days to avoid
Strong westerly wind is Castor's main enemy: when it blows (common in July), lifts close for safety and visibility drops sharply. Always check the mountain weather report before heading up.
๐ก Community tip
Ushuaia is the best base, with direct flights from Buenos Aires. Pair skiing with the End of the World Train and a Beagle Channel cruise for a bucket-list trip. Equipment rental at the base is good quality and reasonably priced.
