About the resort
🏔️ History
Cerro Castor, 26 km from Ushuaia in Argentine Tierra del Fuego, holds the title of the world's southernmost ski resort. Opened in 1999 on the slopes of its namesake peak within Tierra del Fuego National Park, it boasts Argentina's longest ski season — June through October — thanks to its sub-Antarctic latitude and the moderating influence of the Beagle Channel.
☀️ Best days
August and September offer the best conditions: settled snow, longer days and lighter Patagonian winds. Midweek days in August after a fresh snowfall are the most prized by Ushuaia locals racing to catch the first chairlift.
🚫 Days to avoid
Strong westerly wind is Castor's main enemy: when it blows (common in July), lifts close for safety and visibility drops sharply. Always check the mountain weather report before heading up.
💡 Community tip
Ushuaia is the best base, with direct flights from Buenos Aires. Pair skiing with the End of the World Train and a Beagle Channel cruise for a bucket-list trip. Equipment rental at the base is good quality and reasonably priced.

USH🚗 Driving from Ushuaia: Cerro Castor holds the title of the southernmost ski resort in the world, and it is located just 26km from the city of Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego province. The drive from the city or the Ushuaia Airport (USH) is incredibly easy—taking only about 30 minutes along the fully paved National Route 3. Unlike many other Andean resorts that require terrifying high-altitude mountain climbs, the base of Cerro Castor is only 195 meters above sea level.
⚠️ Winter Driving at the End of the World: Even though the road is flat and wide, Tierra del Fuego experiences harsh Antarctic winter conditions. Route 3 frequently freezes over. If you rent a car in Ushuaia, ensure it comes with studded snow tires (very common there) or snow chains, which the provincial police often mandate you carry in the trunk.
Local Tips
💡 The Longest Snow Season: Because of its extreme southern latitude, Cerro Castor boasts the longest and most reliable ski season in South America (often running well into October) and does not suffer from altitude sickness issues like the central Andes resorts. Many national ski teams from Europe and North America run their southern hemisphere summer training camps here.
