About the resort
🏔️ History
Cerro Chapelco is the most important ski resort in Neuquén province and one of Argentina's most beloved. Opened in 1966 within Lanín National Park, near San Martín de los Andes, it is known for its araucaria forests, views over Lago Lácar and for hosting South America's first Alpine Ski World Cup events.
☀️ Best days
July and August bring the best snowfall. Weekdays following a stormy weekend offer well-groomed pistes and smaller crowds. The tree-lined terrain shelters snow from wind, keeping conditions good for several days after each storm.
🚫 Days to avoid
Argentine winter school holidays (last two weeks of July) overwhelm access from San Martín de los Andes and create long queues at the base lifts. Sunny August weekends also draw heavy crowds from local visitors and Chilean tourists.
💡 Community tip
Staying in San Martín de los Andes (20 km away) is the smartest base: excellent food and accommodation options. Your lift pass includes the Huenú Huenú sector — the highest vertical drop with red and black runs almost always less crowded. Don't miss the Siete Lagos road if you have a car.

BRC🚗 Driving from San Martin de los Andes: Cerro Chapelco is located about 20km from the incredibly picturesque lakeside resort town of San Martín de los Andes. The drive from town to the resort base takes less than 30 minutes up a gently graded, well-maintained road (National Route 40, then Provincial Route 19). If you fly into the small domestic Chapelco Airport (CPC), the town is about 20 minutes away, and the resort another 20. However, many visitors fly into Bariloche (BRC) and drive 2.5 hours north instead due to greater international flight availability.
⚠️ Snow Chains: The Provincial 19 access road can get heavy snow or black ice. All rental cars and private vehicles are strictly required to carry snow chains, and traffic control personnel may force you to put them on at the bottom of the climb during storms.
Local Tips
💡 Enjoy the Town's Charm: Unlike some ski resorts where you stay isolated on the mountain, San Martin de los Andes is widely considered one of the most beautiful, safe, and charming towns in all of Patagonia. It features dozens of award-winning restaurants, craft breweries, and wood artisan shops sitting right on the shore of Lake Lácar. Make a point to explore the town for après-ski.
