Chamonix – Mont-Blanc

🏔️ History
Host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and situated at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc (4,807m), Chamonix is the global epicenter of alpinism and extreme skiing. It is not a single, seamlessly interlinked ski resort, but rather a vibrant, bustling valley town serving several distinct, disconnected ski areas (Brévent, Flégère, Grands Montets, Les Houches). It’s a real town rich with mountaineering history and an unmatched international vibe.

☀️ Best days
Bluebird powder days following a massive dump, heading up Grands Montets or taking on the legendary Vallée Blanche (a 20km unpisted glacier descent). The lift-accessed backcountry terrain in Chamonix is arguably the best and wildest in the world, acting as a magnet for the globe's elite freeriders. The sustained steep vertical and dry high-altitude powder are unbeatable.

🚫 Days to avoid
Bad weather or high wind days. Much of Chamonix's legendary terrain is extremely high and exposed (like the Aiguille du Midi cable car at 3,842m or the top of Grands Montets). During storms or high avalanche danger, these critical lifts shut down, causing the lower, tree-lined areas (like Les Houches) to become massively overcrowded, and the valley floor can feel damp and claustrophobic.

💡 Community tip
Chamonix is generally not the right choice for absolute beginners or families looking for hundreds of kilometers of easy, interconnected green pistes. You come here for the brutal vertical drops, the epic glacier views, and the serious off-piste. Hiring a high-mountain guide is practically mandatory to safely enjoy the iconic glacier descents (where harnesses and crampons are standard ski gear).
