🏔️ History
Situated right on the French-Swiss border, Châtel is a traditional Haute-Savoie farming village that has perfectly preserved its original architecture of wooden chalets, avoiding the concrete tower blocks of the 60s. It is a crucial cornerstone in the massive Portes du Soleil domain, acting as the vital link between the French resorts (like Avoriaz) and the Swiss ones (Morgins, Torgon). It blends rustic alpine charm with increasingly modernized lift infrastructure.

☀️ Best days
Cold January days right after a storm. The Linga/Pré-la-Joux sector offers some of the most consistent, uninterrupted steep pitches in all of Portes du Soleil, making it an absolute dream for high-speed carving. The wooded areas around Plaine Dranse are fantastic for finding untracked snow and maintaining visibility during stormy weather.

🚫 Days to avoid
Rainy or unseasonably warm spring days. The village base sits at 1,200m and the maximum altitude of its immediate sectors is not particularly high. During warm spells, the snow on the lower home runs can disappear rapidly, turning the final descents back to the village into heavy, slushy, or muddy ordeals.

💡 Community tip
Châtel is a true on-piste gastronomic paradise. Don't just ski straight through; the Plaine Dranse area is affectionately known as the "restaurant village," packed with old shepherd huts converted into cozy mountain refuges serving the finest local Abondance cheese dishes. For skiing, get up early and hit the steep Linga black run before it gets chopped up into moguls.
