🏔️ History
Corralco is one of South American skiing's best-kept secrets, located at the foot of the Lonquimay volcano in the Malalcahuello National Reserve, Araucanía Region, with a base at 1,240 m and summit at 2,400 m. Opened in 2010, it is one of Chile's most modern resorts, with world-class facilities set in a native pehuén (monkey-puzzle tree) forest that feels more like the European Alps than the tropical Andes. Its cold, dry snow — favoured by latitude and altitude — is compared by many visitors to Japanese powder. Corralco is also known for one of South America's longest seasons, which can stretch from May to November.
☀️ Best days
July and August bring the highest snow quality. South Pacific depressions deposit abundant cold, light snow that is preserved for days on north-facing slopes. The early season (June) often offers uncrowded slopes with surprisingly good conditions. The forested terrain buffers wind and keeps pistes in good shape even on variable weather days.
🚫 Days to avoid
Lonquimay volcanic activity can generate ash and gas in sporadic episodes — always check SERNAGEOMIN. Access from Temuco (2.5h) or Curacautín (35 km) can be complicated during heavy snowfall. August weekends with good conditions fill up quickly, especially long weekends.
💡 Community tip
Corralco is the ideal resort for those seeking European-quality snow in South America without crowds. The base hotel is comfortable with excellent local gastronomy. For freeride, the forested sectors are a delight — skiing among monkey-puzzle trees is a unique experience in the world. The proximity to Conguillío National Park (40 km) allows combining skiing with world-class trekking on snow-free days.
