Known as the "Queen of the Dolomites", Cortina is a symbol of glamour and alpine beauty. Host of the 1956 Olympics and future co-host in 2026, its spectacular pink-hued peaks attract both skiers and the Italian elite seeking style and world-class dining.
☀️ Best days
From January 10th onward or in March. March is ideal for spring skiing, offering longer daylight hours, great high-altitude snow, and perfect conditions for long lunches on sunny terraces.
🚫 Days to avoid
The Christmas period through January 6th (Epiphany), the Italian February school holidays (Settimana Bianca), and sunny weekends. Prices surge and traffic becomes heavy during these times.
💡 Community tip
Cortina comprises three main unconnected ski areas (Faloria, Tofane, Cinque Torri); dedicate a full day to each rather than bussing between them. Don't miss the spectacular "Armentarola" run at Lagazuoi, which famously ends with a horse-drawn ski tow.

🚗 Main access: Cortina d'Ampezzo is the "Queen of the Dolomites." The classic route from the south (Venice/Treviso) is taking the A27 autobahn until it ends at Belluno, then continuing straight north on the SS51 road (Alemagna Road) right into Cortina. From the north (Innsbruck/Puster Valley), you access it by driving south on the SS51 from Dobbiaco (Toblach).
⚠️ Winter driving: The SS51 from either Belluno or Dobbiaco follows the valley floor and is relatively wide and accessible, meaning you rarely have to cross massive alpine passes if using these main arteries. Nevertheless, winter tires are strictly mandatory by law. If you attempt to reach Cortina from other Dolomite valleys (like Alta Badia or Val Gardena), you must cross high mountain passes (like Falzarego or Tre Croci), which frequently require snow chains.
Local Tips
💡 Skibus network: Because Cortina's distinct ski areas (Tofana, Faloria-Cristallo, Cinque Torri) are not fully linked to each other on skis, using the extensive local Skibus network is mandatory to explore the whole Ampezzo valley. The bus pass can often be purchased as a bundle with your ski pass.
