About the resort
🏔️ History
Farellones is Chile's most accessible mountain village and ski resort, at 2,350 m altitude just 46 km from Santiago. It is Chile's first ski resort, founded in 1932, and one of the oldest in South America. The small alpine village at the base of the slopes has long been the winter holiday destination for Santiago families. It shares the ridge with El Colorado and together they form the most visited ski complex in the country. Farellones is known for its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere with gentle terrain ideal for beginners.
☀️ Best days
July and August bring the best snowfall. Weekday sunny days are the favourite for families: uncongested slopes and spectacular views of the capital. The north-facing lower pistes enjoy good morning sun, perfect for young children.
🚫 Days to avoid
Weekends are extremely busy, especially in July. The G-21 road can be gridlocked from 9am. On rainy or low-snow days, the lower pistes can be in poor condition.
💡 Community tip
Farellones is the ideal starting point for families with children learning to ski. The combined pass with El Colorado grants access to a much larger domain. Going very early (before 8:00) or mid-morning avoids the worst traffic on the access road.

🚗 Driving from Santiago: Farellones is the historic, quaint mountain village sitting right at the famous "Curve 40" on the steep Andean road (Route G-21) up from Santiago. The drive takes about 1 to 1.5 hours (36km) depending heavily on traffic. Driving independently allows you to stay in the cozy cabins of Farellones village and access its snow park or drive 10 minutes further up to El Colorado and La Parva.
⚠️ The Notorious "40 Curvas": The road is fully paved but incredibly winding, featuring 40 tight hairpin switchbacks. Snow chains must be carried by law during the winter; Carabineros (police) run a checkpoint at Corral Quemado and will turn back anyone without them. On peak season weekends/holidays, strict one-way traffic restrictions apply (typically uphill-only 8am-2pm, downhill-only 4pm-8pm).
Local Tips
💡 The Hub of Andes Life: Farellones is not really a major skiable domain itself; it is primarily a snow activities park and absolute-beginner ski zone. However, it functions as the base village and residential hub for the Tres Valles. If you stay here, you are in a charming village setting while only being a 15-minute drive from the main expert ski lifts up at El Colorado or La Parva.
