🏔️ History
Formed by the union of two historic villages, Barèges and La Mongie, Grand Tourmalet is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. Nestled beneath the legendary Pic du Midi—famous for its astronomical observatory founded in 1878—the resort perfectly blends classic thermal spa charm with high-altitude skiing infrastructure.

March. Due to its orientation and high altitude, powdery snow holds up exceptionally well late into the season, providing a stunning contrast of crisp blue skies and pristine white slopes.
🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and Sundays in February. The La Mongie base area can experience severe bottlenecks at the main lifts, and the slope-side parking lots often hit full capacity early in the morning.

The area is vast and varied; spend your mornings cruising the sunny slopes of La Mongie, and in the afternoon, escape to the scenic, tree-lined descents down to Barèges. For an unforgettable experience, book a cable car ride up to the Pic du Midi: enjoy the panoramic views and, if you're an expert, tackle the legendary off-piste descent with a guide.

🚗 Separate winter access: Grand Tourmalet has two sides (La Mongie and Barèges) that are NOT connected by road in winter, as the Col du Tourmalet mountain pass is closed due to snow. To reach La Mongie, you must access via Tarbes and Bagnères-de-Bigorre (D918 road). To reach Barèges, you must access via Lourdes and Luz-Saint-Sauveur (D921 and D918 roads).
⚠️ Chains mandatory: Both routes are high mountain roads where winter tires or chains are legally required (Nov 1st - Mar 31st). Make sure to set your GPS to the correct side of the resort where your accommodation is located.
Local Tips
💡 Choose your vibe: La Mongie is purpose-built, 100% ski-in/ski-out with 1970s architecture. Barèges is an authentic, traditional mountain village nestled in a wooded valley. Make absolutely sure you know which side you are staying on, as driving between them takes almost 2 hours in winter!
