About the resort

🏔️ History
Founded by Max Dercum in 1970, Keystone was designed from the ground up as a family-friendly mountain featuring wide groomers cut through dense pine forests. It was an early pioneer in large-scale snowmaking systems and has established itself as one of Colorado's premier night skiing destinations, offering some of the longest ski days in the Rocky Mountains.

☀️ Best days
Wednesdays and Thursdays are perfect for enjoying freshly groomed slopes with minimal crowds. Late afternoons transitioning into night skiing under the floodlights on Dercum Mountain offer a unique atmosphere.

🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season, due to Keystone's immense popularity with families driving up from Denver. The River Run base area experiences major bottlenecks during morning peak hours.

💡 Community tip
To avoid lift queues and find the best snow, head straight to the back peaks of North Peak and The Outback, which offer steeper terrain and less-crowded tree glades.

🚗 Road routes: Drive I-70 West from Denver, cross through the Eisenhower Tunnel, take Exit 205 at Silverthorne, and follow US-6 East for 6 miles (10 km) to Keystone. Loveland Pass (US-6) frequently closes during storms for avalanche mitigation, routing hazmat trucks through the I-70 tunnel and causing traffic holds.

Local Tips

💡 Family convenience: The free parking at River Run makes Keystone one of the most accessible and budget-friendly major resorts in Colorado for families driving up for a day trip.
