About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1958 by Preston Smith, Killington expanded rapidly to earn its title as "The Beast of the East." It is historically known for its massive snowmaking system and for offering the longest ski season in Eastern North America, often opening in October and running through late May, alongside hosting annual women's FIS Alpine World Cup races.
☀️ Best days
Mid-week days in February and March provide the maximum terrain coverage and the best snow conditions. Cold January mornings are great when fresh natural snow has fallen.
🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays throughout the winter, when the resort experiences high volume from Boston and New York metro area skiers. Holiday weekends bring heavy traffic to Killington Road.
💡 Community tip
Park at the Bear Mountain lot for faster access to the steeper advanced runs. In the spring, don't miss the famous tailgating scene and bump skiing at the Superstar chairlift, where local skiers gather in the sun.

No direct transfer🚗 Direct road access: Take US-4 (East/West) or VT-100 directly to the Killington Road, which climbs 5 miles (8 km) to the mountain bases. US-4 is well-maintained during winter. The resort is a 3-hour drive from Boston and 4.5 hours from New York City.
Local Tips
💡 Start at Skyeship to avoid traffic: The Skyeship Base, located directly on US-4, is an excellent place to park and access the mountain early on busy weekend mornings, bypassing the drive up the congested Killington Road.
