About the resort

🏔️ History
Located in a deep valley west of Sapporo, Kiroro is a purpose-built resort strategically positioned to catch as much snow as geographically possible. Developed in the 1990s, it lacks a traditional village base (it essentially consists of a couple of massive hotels), but it makes up for this with modern infrastructure, fast, hooded lifts, and a very progressive, welcoming policy toward off-piste and backcountry skiing.

☀️ Best days
Relentless storm days in January. Kiroro is legendary as a "snow magnet," often receiving upwards of 20 meters of snow per season. Its specific topography funnels heavy, snow-laden clouds straight from the Sea of Japan, dumping amounts that dwarf neighboring resorts.

🚫 Days to avoid
Extremely high-wind days or total whiteouts. While the tree skiing offers some shelter, Kiroro’s storms can be so feral that they force the closure of the upper lifts. Also, weekends see significant influxes of day-trippers from nearby Sapporo.

💡 Community tip
Kiroro is an absolute paradise for tree skiing. They operate an excellently managed backcountry access gate system (you must register your plan and carry avalanche rescue gear). The snow here stays cold and pristine for a long time. It makes for the perfect day trip from Otaru or Sapporo when you are chasing the deepest snow imaginable.
