About the resort
🏔️ History
Kranjska Gora, nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps near the Austrian and Italian borders, is Slovenia's oldest ski resort, opening its first lift in 1948. It is world-renowned for hosting the Vitranc Cup World Cup races and sits next to the legendary ski flying hills of Planica. Over the decades, it has evolved while preserving its classic alpine village charm, becoming the country's premier family destination.
☀️ Best days
Crisp, cold days in January or February with freshly groomed slopes. The resort provides a postcard-perfect alpine setting surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks. The Podkoren sector is best for finding steeper, firmer terrain and excellent snow quality for carving.
🚫 Days to avoid
Warm spells in early or late season. Due to its low altitude (800m–1,215m), rising temperatures or rain can quickly turn the snow to heavy slush. Also avoid the Vitranc Cup race weekend unless you are visiting specifically for the races, due to road closures and heavy resort crowds.
💡 Community tip
Test your technique on the famous Podkoren 3 slope, a steep World Cup giant slalom run. For lunch, stop at the rustic Kosobrin log cabin right on the slopes. Don't leave without visiting the beautiful, frozen Lake Jasna just outside the village at the end of the day.

Local Tips
💡 Tip: It is a strong base with non-skiers; for stronger skiers, Podkoren provides the more technical Vitranc-linked terrain.
