About the resort
🏔️ History
Conceived in the 1960s by a visionary team (including the famous architect Charlotte Perriand), Les Arcs was built as an avant-garde "laboratory" for alpine urbanism, designed to be car-free and integrated into the landscape (earning the "20th Century Heritage" label). Since 2003, the Vanoise Express cable car links it to La Plagne to form Paradiski, one of the world's largest ski areas.

January or mid-week in March. January provides excellent, cold snow and quiet slopes after the holidays, while March offers longer days and warmer sunshine.
🚫 Days to avoid
Christmas, New Year's, and the February French school holidays, when the massive resort is at full capacity and lift queues can be grueling.
💡 Community tip
Research the different villages before booking: Arc 1600 (quiet, original), Arc 1800 (lively, largest), Arc 1950 (luxurious, aesthetic), and Arc 2000 (sporty, highest). A massive perk is the funicular from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, allowing you to access the slopes directly from the train station. Start early to beat the crowds, and eat lunch off-peak (before 11:30 or after 14:00).

🚗 Main access: Take the A43 motorway to Albertville, then follow the RN90 dual carriageway to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. From there, take the mountain road up to the various resort villages (Arc 1600, 1800, 1950, and 2000).
⚠️ Chains and traffic: The climb to the altitude villages is steep and winding. Winter tires or snow chains are strictly mandatory during winter. On peak holiday changeover days, traffic in the Tarentaise valley and on the mountain road can be extremely heavy.
Local Tips
💡 Free funicular & shuttles: If you show a valid train ticket to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and proof of accommodation, the funicular ride up is usually free. Once in the resort, rely entirely on the excellent free inter-village shuttle bus network.
