About the resort
🏔️ History
Known as "Little Tibet" due to its altitude and historical winter isolation, Livigno once relied on shepherds and smuggling. In the 1960s, it transformed into a premier ski hub that enjoys duty-free status today, and will host events for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

🚫 Days to avoid
Christmas, New Year's, and February half-term holidays. Weekends also get busy with visitors coming for both skiing and duty-free shopping.
💡 Community tip
The resort spans two sides of the valley (Mottolino and Carosello 3000). Use the free shuttle buses to travel between them. Fuel, alcohol, and gear are significantly cheaper due to duty-free status, so plan your shopping accordingly.

🚗 Main access: Livigno (known as the "Little Tibet") is one of the most remote, high-altitude resorts in Europe and enjoys tax-free status. In winter, there are only two ways to drive in: 1) From Italy (south/Milan), you must drive to Bormio and cross the winding Foscagno Pass (2,291 m), which is kept open year-round. 2) From the north/Central Europe (Switzerland), you must drive to Zernez and cross through the Munt la Schera Tunnel, a single-lane toll tunnel.
⚠️ Extreme winter driving: Driving to Livigno in winter is a serious endeavor. The Foscagno Pass strictly requires winter tires (frequently checked by police) and often chains. The Munt la Schera tunnel has regulated traffic lights and alternating directions (on winter Saturdays, it runs only one-way for several hours), so you must check the timetable in advance. Critical warning: The Forcola Pass (connecting to Tirano/Switzerland) is completely closed in winter under meters of snow. Never follow a GPS routing you over the Forcola Pass between November and May.
Local Tips
💡 Cheap diesel paradise: Because of its duty-free status, fuel in Livigno is vastly cheaper than the rest of Italy and Europe. Make absolutely sure you fill up your tank before you leave! However, be very careful with your allowances for alcohol, tobacco, and perfumes, as there are strict customs border checks upon exiting the valley.
