About the resort

🏔️ History
Opened in 1975, this Hautes-Pyrénées resort was born from local initiatives to boost winter tourism. Beyond skiing, its winding access road is globally famous as an epic, punishing stage finish in major cycling races like the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.

☀️ Best days
March often provides a great balance of strong snow coverage and sunny days, perfect for relaxed mid-week skiing.

🚫 Days to avoid
The week between Christmas and New Year, as well as the February school holidays, when the relatively compact resort can feel overcrowded.

💡 Community tip
It's a fantastic, scenic resort divided into two sectors: Aulian (more dynamic) and Béderet (ideal for families/beginners). Leave your car behind by using the free shuttle bus from the authentic valley village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. To skip lift lines, look into "Fast Pass" or "No Souci" ski pass options.

🚗 Main access: From Tarbes or Lourdes, head south on the N21 and continue on the D821 to Pierrefitte-Nestalas. Follow the gorge road (D921) until you reach the base village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. From the village, a spectacular (and famous) 14 km mountain road (the D112) with numerous hairpin bends climbs directly to the resort base of Luz Ardiden (Aulian sector).

⚠️ Chains mandatory: The final 14 km ascent is a high mountain road. Winter tires or chains are strictly mandatory by law (Nov 1st - Mar 31st) and highly recommended as the road frequently snows over during storms.

Local Tips

💡 Après-ski relaxation: The layout of Luz Ardiden means most skiers stay in the valley village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. This is actually a huge plus: you get to enjoy the vibrant local village life and relax your muscles at the excellent "Luzéa" thermal baths after a hard day on the slopes.
