About the resort
🏔️ History
Mammoth Mountain owes its existence to the grit of Dave McCoy, who began operating portable rope tows here in the 1930s and officially founded the resort in 1953. Set on an inactive volcanic dome in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, Mammoth is renowned for receiving colossal winter storms and maintaining one of the longest ski seasons in North America, often extending into July.
☀️ Best days
Mid-week days in late winter and spring (March through May) offer world-class spring skiing under bluebird skies. Sunny mornings immediately following a Pacific storm produce exceptional dry powder.
🚫 Days to avoid
Holiday weekends and days with severe wind warnings. High winds along the ridge often trigger wind-holds on the upper gondola and top lifts, restricting skiing to the lower mountain chairs.
💡 Community tip
Avoid the heavy traffic at Main Lodge by staying in town and riding the free Village Gondola. For advanced terrain without the crowds, head to the back side chairs (like Chair 14 or Outpost).
Nearest Airports
Eastern Sierra Regional Airport (Bishop)
BIHReno-Tahoe International Airport
RNO🚗 Access & mountain passes: The primary route is the scenic US Route 395. It is a 5-6 hour drive north from Los Angeles, or a 3-hour drive south from Reno. US-395 can experience severe wind and snow closures, particularly at Sherwin Grade or Conway Summit.
Local Tips
💡 Chain control requirements: During heavy Sierra snowstorms, California law strictly enforces carrying tire chains (under R-1, R-2, and R-3 road conditions on Highway 203) unless you have an AWD/4WD vehicle with approved snow tires.
