About the resort
🏔️ History
Mariborsko Pohorje, the largest ski resort in Slovenia, is famous for its unique proximity to the city of Maribor and for hosting the prestigious women's World Cup "Golden Fox" (Zlata Lisica) race since 1964. Its slopes bridge vibrant urban life with the dense spruce forests of the Pohorje massif, having evolved over decades from a local ski hill into a fully equipped winter sports destination.
☀️ Best days
Cold, clear winter days following fresh snowfall. The Areh sector (the upper part of the resort) is the highlight, where the higher altitude helps the dry powder hold up best against the sun. If snow cover permits, the continuous 1,000m vertical descent from the Areh summit all the way down to the Snow Stadium base near the city limits is a spectacular experience.
🚫 Days to avoid
Warm or rainy winter days, particularly affecting the lower slopes. Because the resort base sits at a very low altitude (only 325m), rising temperatures can quickly turn the snow to wet slush. Also avoid busy high-season weekends when urban crowds saturate the access roads and base lift facilities.
💡 Community tip
Don't miss night skiing, which boasts one of the longest floodlit slopes in Europe with up to 10 km of skiable terrain. For a mountain lunch, the restaurant at Bolfenk serves excellent traditional Pohorje dishes, while in Maribor, the world-class Hiša Denk is a must-visit for fine dining.

💡 Tip: Because the base is low, prioritize cold days and check both snow conditions and Visit Pohorje parking notices before travelling.
