๐๏ธ History
Located in Niigata Prefecture at the foot of Mount Myoko, Myoko Kogen is not a single resort but a collective of older, traditional ski areas (like Akakura Onsen, established in the 1930s). Once a favored mountain retreat for Japan's imperial family, it retains much of the rustic, unpolished charm of "old Japan." While lacking the modern luxury and development of Niseko, its authenticity and rich hot spring culture make it a revered destination.
โ๏ธ Best days
Deep storm days in mid-winter. Niigata is famous for colossal snowfalls, often recording heavier dumps than even Hokkaido. The storms pull moisture off the Sea of Japan and dump it massively over Myoko. It is a true powder paradise, ideal for chest-deep tree skiing in resorts like Seki Onsen.
๐ซ Days to avoid
Thermal inversions or late March. Because the ski areas of Myoko Kogen sit at relatively low elevations (many bases are below 800m) and are located on the main island of Honshu, snow quality degrades much faster than in Hokkaido. The legendary powder can quickly turn into dense, heavy "cascade concrete" if temperatures creep up.
๐ก Community tip
Unlike some stricter areas in Japan, Myoko Kogen is highly tolerant of off-piste and tree skiing. There isn't one universal pass for all the disconnected resorts, but shuttles run between them. For an unforgettable, rustic powder experience, visit the tiny resort of Seki Onsen. It features ancient, single-seater lifts and zero frills, but it offers the deepest, most unrestricted sidecountry tree skiing in the region. Soaking in the iron-rich, red hot springs afterwards is mandatory.
