About the resort

🏔️ History
Located in Niigata Prefecture, Naeba is one of Japan's most historic and iconic ski resorts. It famously hosted Japan's first FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in 1973. The resort's identity is intrinsically tied to the colossal Naeba Prince Hotel at the base, an imposing symbol of the country's 1980s "ski boom" era.

☀️ Best days
Late January through February. During peak winter, fierce storms rolling across the Sea of Japan dump massive quantities of dry, light snow on the resort, turning it into a deep powder playground.

🚫 Days to avoid
Weekends and the New Year's holiday period. Thanks to incredibly easy access from Tokyo (via the Shinkansen and a short bus ride), it is extremely popular. Expect massive crowds, long lift queues at the base, and a bustling hotel environment.

💡 Community tip
If the main Naeba slopes get too crowded, hop on the "Dragondola." Holding the record as Japan's longest gondola—a visually stunning 20-minute ride over forested valleys—it connects you directly to the neighboring Kagura ski area. Kagura offers higher elevation, superior un-groomed powder terrain, and a much quieter atmosphere.
