Orelle

🏔️ History
Orelle is a small, discreet village in the Maurienne valley that, in 1996, connected its domain to Val Thorens through the construction of the "3 Vallées Express" gondola. Today, it is known as the "fourth valley" of Les 3 Vallées and has revolutionized access to the massive French domain, allowing skiers to reach the system's highest peaks (3,230 m at the Sommet des 3 Vallées) in a matter of minutes straight from the valley floor.

☀️ Best days
Clear winter or spring days. The Orelle sector receives a vast amount of sun due to its south-facing orientation, making it an exceptionally pleasant spot on cold January mornings. Its wide red and blue runs from Bouchet or Rosaël invite very fast, flowing descents with excellent visibility.

🚫 Days to avoid
Days with extreme south or southeast wind (Lombarde wind) and storms. Because it is the most exposed and elevated sector, if the wind exceeds safety limits, the connections to Val Thorens will be closed. The snow can also deteriorate quickly in late spring due to the intense sun exposure.

💡 Community tip
Orelle is the best-kept "secret" to avoid the traffic and high prices of the Tarentaise valley. If you are traveling from Italy (via the Fréjus Tunnel) or southern France, park for free at the Orelle base (at 880 m) and take the Orelle-Caron gondola (opened in 2021); you'll be skiing at 3,200 m long before those driving up to Val Thorens.
