About the resort
🏔️ History
Located in the Sistema Central mountain range less than an hour from Madrid, Puerto de Navacerrada is one of Spain's pioneer ski resorts, with roots dating back to the 1940s. It is the historic cradle of Spanish ski champions (like the Fernández-Ochoa family). Today, it is a small, nostalgic resort split into two zones: the lower area (for beginners, sheltered among pine trees) and the upper area (demanding red runs overlooking the vast Castilian plateau).
☀️ Best days
Clear, bitterly cold days following a heavy northern storm. When substantial snow falls and temperatures plunge, the runs in the upper sector (such as the legendary "Escaparate" or "Guarramillas") offer surprisingly demanding skiing with unparalleled views. On a clear day, you can actually see the skyscrapers of Madrid from the summit.
🚫 Days to avoid
Any sunny weekend during peak season or windy days. Because of its extreme proximity to Madrid, day-trippers and sledge-riders cause absolute gridlock; the parking lot and access roads are routinely completely paralyzed before 8:00 AM. Furthermore, lacking a massive modern snowmaking infrastructure, the lower runs turn into sheets of ice very quickly.
💡 Community tip
If you must go on a weekend, the secret isn't just waking up early; it's taking the vintage local train (Cercanías Line C-9) from Cercedilla, which drops you off right at the slopes and bypasses the traffic hell. Be warned: the upper zone runs are no joke. They are genuinely steep, old-school red pistes that are frequently hard-packed or icy. It's only worth visiting if half a meter of fresh snow fell the week prior; otherwise, expect rocks and severe ice.
