About the resort

๐Ÿ”๏ธ History
Located on the opposite side of Mount Yotei from Niseko, Rusutsu is a unique resort complex in Hokkaido. Its most iconic visual isn't just the mountain, but rather the massive summer amusement park (featuring roller coasters half-buried in winter snow) situated right next to the sprawling base hotel. Despite this theme-park appearance, the ski area itself is one of the largest in Japan and boasts an incredibly efficient, modern lift infrastructure.

โ˜€๏ธ Best days
Heavy storm days ("Niseko storms"). Rusutsu receives the exact same legendary quality and quantity of snow as its famous neighbor, but because the terrain is spread across three distinct mountains and it remains slightly less tracked out by international crowds, the deep powder lasts significantly longer.

๐Ÿšซ Days to avoid
Sunny weekends. Because of its massive, highly convenient resort base, it fills up quickly with domestic tourists and large tour groups. The base area can feel overwhelmingly commercial and lacks traditional Japanese alpine charm due to the sheer size of the hotel complex.

๐Ÿ’ก Community tip
Rusutsu is globally renowned for offering some of the best tree skiing on earth. The spaces between the official runs have virtually no underbrush, and the spacing of the birch trees is absolutely perfect. While their official off-piste policy can be strict (never duck closed ropes), dipping into the trees between the main groomed runs is tolerated and will provide the powder turns of your life. Make sure to head to the Isola lifts for the longest vertical drops.
