About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1957, Saint-Lary-Soulan was the brainchild of a visionary local mayor seeking to revitalize this Pyrenean valley. It combines the charm of a traditional thermal spa town (Saint-Lary) with tiered, high-altitude ski areas, growing into the giant of the French Pyrenees.
☀️ Best days
Weekends in March. The spring snow holds up remarkably well in the higher altitude sectors, and the milder weather allows you to truly enjoy the stunning views of the Néouvielle Massif.
🚫 Days to avoid
The French February school holidays (especially zones A and C). Being the largest resort in the French Pyrenees, the access gondolas and cable cars from the valley town up to the slopes (Pla d'Adet) can see waiting times exceeding an hour.
💡 Community tip
The resort is clearly divided into three zones. "Pla d'Adet" (1,700m) is a family and beginner haven. If you're an intermediate or advanced skier, don't linger there—push on to "Espiaube" (1,900m) for long, thrilling red runs, or up to "Vallon du Portet" (2,400m) for flawless snow and majestic landscapes. Finish your day by soaking in the famous Sensoria thermal baths.

Direct transfer available🚗 Main access: From Lannemezan (exit 16 on the A64 motorway), head south on the D929 straight down the beautiful Vallée d'Aure to the village of Saint-Lary-Soulan. Access to the village at the valley floor (830m) rarely presents snow issues. To go skiing, it is highly recommended to leave your car in the village and use the cable car or gondola.
⚠️ Driving to the slopes: If you choose to stay at or drive up to the altitude sectors (Pla d'Adet at 1700m or Espiaube at 1900m), the winding 12 km mountain road will require winter tires or chains (strictly mandatory under the Loi Montagne: Nov 1st - Mar 31st) as soon as it snows.
Local Tips
💡 A vibrant village: Saint-Lary is one of the most lively villages in the French Pyrenees, packed with local shops, crêperies, and the spectacular "Sensoria Rio" thermal spa. Staying down in the village and riding the new gondola up each day is the most authentic way to experience the resort.
