About the resort

🏔️ History
Samoëns is the only French ski resort officially classified as a "Historic Monument". It is an ancient village of stonemasons ("frahans") featuring solid stone architecture and medieval streets, which became connected to the massive Grand Massif ski area via the Grand Massif Express gondola.

☀️ Best days
January and February. Although the village is at a very low altitude (720m), the slopes up at Samoëns 1600 and the Saix plateau accumulate immense amounts of snow thanks to the proximity of the Mont Blanc massif, which acts as a snow magnet.

🚫 Days to avoid
Rainy days in the lower valleys late in the season. Because the village is so low, there are no pistes returning directly to it; you must download via the gondola at the end of the day, which can cause significant queues around 5:00 PM.

💡 Community tip
This is easily the prettiest and most authentic village in the entire Grand Massif. If post-ski charm is your priority, stay here. On the mountain, do not miss the blue "Cascades" run: a 14km uninterrupted descent from Flaine (2,500m) down to Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, passing frozen waterfalls without seeing a single ski lift.

🚗 Access by road: To reach Samoëns by car, follow the main highways leading from the closest gateway (Geneva Cointrin Airport). The final mountain ascent is well maintained, but expect sharp hairpins and typical mountain gradients of France.

⚠️ Snow chains: During the winter months, carrying snow chains in your vehicle or fitting certified winter tires is a legal requirement on the roads of France.

Local Tips

💡 Local tip: Try to arrive before 8:30 AM on powder Saturdays to avoid traffic queues on the final valley roads and secure a parking spot closest to the primary lifts.
