About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1941 with the construction of the iconic Chantemerle cable car, Serre Chevalier is one of the largest and oldest ski areas in the Southern French Alps. It seamlessly links the historic, UNESCO-listed citadel of Briançon with several traditional villages stretching along the Guisane valley.
☀️ Best days
March. Benefiting from a unique Mediterranean-alpine climate, it boasts 300 days of sunshine a year. March delivers brilliant bluebird mornings and mild afternoons, with snow holding up excellently among its famous larch forests.
🚫 Days to avoid
The February school holidays, particularly for the Marseille and Southern France zone, when traffic and lift queues from the valley floor become heavy.
💡 Community tip
This resort is an absolute lifesaver on bad weather days, thanks to its immense, ancient larch forests that block the wind and provide incredible visibility. Stay in Villeneuve or Chantemerle for the most centralized ski access. After a hard day's skiing, treat yourself to the natural thermal baths in Monêtier-les-Bains.
