About the resort

๐Ÿ”๏ธ History
Ski Portillo is the oldest and most iconic ski resort in South America, opened in 1949 at 2,880 m elevation at the Los Libertadores border crossing (Route 60), 160 km from Santiago. The bright yellow Hotel Portillo โ€” visible from miles away โ€” is the resort's soul and has hosted national ski teams from around the world since the 1960s. The resort is world-famous for its boutique format: only 450 guests at a time, guaranteeing uncrowded slopes. Portillo hosted the first Alpine Ski World Championships held outside Europe in 1966 and remains a pilgrimage destination for high-mountain skiing.

โ˜€๏ธ Best days
July and August concentrate the best snowfall and lightest powder. Portillo's famous "tazas" (bowls), accessible only via the "pomalift" surface lifts (flying saucers), require fresh snow to ski safely. Clear days with 24โ€“48-hour-old powder are the crown jewel.

๐Ÿšซ Days to avoid
Access via Route 60 can be cut by heavy snowfall or border tunnel operations with Argentina. Strong north winds cause complete whiteout and close the upper lifts. Unlike other resorts, there is no alternative village to escape to if the road closes โ€” you may find yourself stranded.

๐Ÿ’ก Community tip
Portillo is a luxury resort with matching prices: week-long all-inclusive packages are the typical way to visit. Laguna del Inca beside the hotel is one of the most photogenic landscapes in the Andes. The "pomalifts" are the resort's signature and carry skiers to the best off-piste bowls โ€” if it's your first time, ask the local guides for advice before heading out alone.
