About the resort

🏔️ History
Officially opened in 1963, Steamboat is steeped in Western ranching heritage and competitive ski history, having produced more winter Olympians than any other town in the U.S. It is world-famous for trademarking the term "Champagne Powder" to describe its uniquely light, dry snow, and for its iconic trails cut through groves of beautiful aspen trees.

☀️ Best days
Stormy days in January and February are prime for riding the trees. Mid-week days ensure fast access through the Christie Peak Express gateway.

🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays during peak winter months and spring break periods in March, when the resort experiences high destination traffic and crowded base area lodges.

💡 Community tip
Steamboat offers some of the best tree skiing in North America; areas like Shadows and Closets are absolute must-runs on powder days. Post-ski, visit the natural mineral pools at Strawberry Park Hot Springs.

🚗 Driving via Rabbit Ears Pass: From Denver, take I-70 West to Silverthorne, head north on CO-9 to Kremmling, and take US-40 West over Rabbit Ears Pass (9,426 ft / 2,873 m) into Steamboat Springs. The pass is notorious for thick fog, blowing snow, and winter closures.

Local Tips

💡 Fewer weekend day-trippers: Because Steamboat is further from Denver than Summit County, it experiences significantly fewer weekend day-tripper crowds and highway traffic once you clear Rabbit Ears Pass.
