About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1962, Vail was envisioned by World War II veterans of the 10th Mountain Division who sought to recreate the charm of European Alpine resorts. It has grown into one of North America's largest ski destinations, famous for its legendary Back Bowls and its vast European-style pedestrian village that set a new benchmark for luxury ski travel.
☀️ Best days
Mid-week mornings following an overnight snowstorm are legendary in the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. January and February consistently deliver the coldest temperatures, preserving the light snow quality.
🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter see massive crowds and severe traffic congestion on the I-70 corridor. The Christmas to New Year holiday week brings the highest prices and peak village crowds.
💡 Community tip
Start your ski day at Golden Peak or Cascade Village to bypass the main gondola bottlenecks in Vail Village. For budget-friendly dining, head slightly outside the main pedestrian village plazas to the local spots along Frontage Road.

No direct transfer🚗 Access & mountain passes: Vail is located directly on I-70 West (exits 173 and 176). Driving from Denver requires crossing Vail Pass (10,662 ft / 3,250 m), which frequently closes due to accidents and heavy snowfall. Gridlock is common on winter weekends.
Local Tips
💡 Bypass the bottlenecks: Start your ski day at Golden Peak or Cascade Village to bypass the morning gondola queues at Vail Village and Lionshead on weekends.
