Val d'Isère

🏔️ History
Once an isolated farming village cut off by snow for half the year, Val d'Isère installed its first drag lift in 1932. It hosted events during the 1992 Winter Olympics and, together with neighboring Tignes, forms the vast, world-renowned Espace Killy domain, honoring the legendary French skier Jean-Claude Killy.

☀️ Best days
December and April. Thanks to its massive altitude and valley orientation, Val d'Isère has one of the most reliable snow records in Europe, opening early and closing late with excellent cover.

🚫 Days to avoid
Christmas and the British February half-term weeks. Accommodation becomes astronomically expensive, and key bottleneck lifts (like the Solaise express) can get heavily congested in the morning.

💡 Community tip
This is a paradise for advanced and expert skiers. Beware: the piste grading here is notoriously "under-marked." Many blue runs in Val d'Isère would easily be classified as reds elsewhere. The famous "La Face de Bellevarde" black run is a titanic challenge (best tackled first thing in the morning when freshly groomed). The après-ski, home to the original La Folie Douce, is legendary.
