About the resort
🏔️ History
Built in 1971, Val Thorens is the crown jewel of the gigantic "Three Valleys" (Les 3 Vallées) ski area. At 2,300m, it holds the title of the highest resort village in Europe. Its purpose-built architecture was designed purely around winter sports, offering the ultimate "ski-in / ski-out" convenience amid a spectacular high-alpine landscape.
☀️ Best days
March and April. Thanks to its extreme altitude, when snow starts turning to slush at lower Alpine resorts in the spring, Val Thorens continues to deliver impeccable mid-winter snow conditions, perfectly paired with longer, sunnier days.
🚫 Days to avoid
Heavy storm days with strong winds. Sitting completely above the tree line, Val Thorens offers zero shelter. During bad weather, "whiteouts" are common, and critical connecting lifts are often shut down for safety due to high winds.
💡 Community tip
If you love putting in the miles, upgrade to the full "Les 3 Vallées" lift pass, but be extremely mindful of your return times so you don't miss the last connecting lifts back up to Val Thorens! The on-piste après-ski scene at La Folie Douce is globally legendary. On a clear day, the Cime Caron cable car (3,200m) is an absolute must for panoramic views.

🚗 Main access: From Albertville, take the dual carriageway N90 until you reach Moûtiers. Take exit 35 for the Vallée des Belleville. Follow the winding D117 mountain road for about 38 km to the very end of the valley, passing through Saint-Martin and Les Menuires, until you reach Val Thorens (2300m).
⚠️ Chains and traffic: Val Thorens is Europe's highest resort. The final ascent can be extremely tricky during a snowstorm. Under the Loi Montagne, winter tires or chains are strictly mandatory (Nov 1st to Mar 31st). Expect heavy traffic jams on Saturdays in the Tarentaise valley.
Local Tips
💡 Car-free Resort: Val Thorens is a semi-pedestrian "ski-in/ski-out" resort. You are allowed to drop your luggage at your accommodation before taking your car to the car park. To get around the village, use the continuous free shuttle buses.
