About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1972 at the Cotos pass in the Sierra de Guadarrama, it is the primary ski resort for residents of Madrid. It was built in a bowl-shaped valley to offer more protected and stable skiing conditions than neighboring areas. Despite chronic snowfall issues due to climate change, it remains a bustling hub of winter sports passion just a short drive from the capital.
☀️ Best days
Cold weekdays in February following a storm. The unique geography of the Valdesquí valley allows it to accumulate and preserve snow surprisingly well for its latitude (earning it the nickname "Madrid's fridge"), offering fun and sunny runs.
🚫 Days to avoid
Absolutely any sunny weekend when there is good snow. Being less than an hour from Madrid (a metropolitan area of over 6 million people), the access road completely collapses by dawn, and the resort regularly shuts its parking lot and ticket offices (due to strict capacity limits) before the sun even rises.
💡 Community tip
If you must go on a weekend, you either drive up before 7:00 AM or take the commuter train (Cercanías) to Cotos and catch the shuttle bus. The resort's Snowpark has a legendary vibe among local riders. It is perfect for beginners and intermediates, though advanced skiers will find the terrain very limited.

Direct transfer available🚗 Main access: From Madrid, take the A-6 motorway to Villalba, then the M-601 climbing up the Puerto de Navacerrada mountain pass. At the top of the pass, turn right onto the winding SG-615 / M-604 road towards Cotos and Valdesquí.
⚠️ Traffic and early starts: Valdesquí is very popular and the parking lot has limited spaces. On sunny weekends, the Guardia Civil (police) may close the access road before 8:00 AM if the lot fills up. If driving, you must wake up extremely early!
Local Tips
💡 Madrid's Snowy Haven: Valdesquí is the largest and most snow-sure resort in the Madrid region. Located in a north-facing "bowl", it retains snow far better than its neighbor Navacerrada. It's an excellent place to learn, but patience is required: weekend lift lines are legendary.
