About the resort
🏔️ History
Opened in 1954 at the Pajares Pass on the border between Asturias and León, this is one of Spain's pioneer ski resorts. Historically crucial to the development of winter sports in northwestern Spain, it has maintained a classic, family-friendly atmosphere while modernizing, most recently with the new Cuitu Negru gondola.
☀️ Best days
Clear weekdays directly following northern weather fronts. The resort catches the moisture from the nearby Cantabrian Sea, benefiting from massive snow dumps when freezing levels are low. On exceptionally clear days, you can even catch glimpses of the ocean.
🚫 Days to avoid
Sunny weekends. Because the resort sits directly on the N-630 mountain pass road, access gets easily paralyzed by traffic, and the relatively small ski area becomes crowded with locals from both Asturias and León.
💡 Community tip
This is an "old school" mountain, much loved by those who appreciate classic, technical terrain. The "Valle del Sol" area is renowned for holding great powder after a storm. Make sure to try the hearty local cuisine, especially the traditional "fabada" (bean stew), at the mountain cafes or nearby village restaurants.
