๐๏ธ History
Valle Nevado is Chile's largest and most modern ski resort, located just 60 km northeast of Santiago in the Andes Cordillera, with its base at 2,860 m. Opened in 1988 and designed by French architects following the integrated alpine village model, all hotels, restaurants and facilities are ski-in/ski-out. Its partnership in the "Tres Valles" system (together with La Parva and El Colorado) makes it part of one of the largest skiable domains in the Southern Hemisphere. The resort has hosted FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events and stands as a benchmark for South American snow tourism.
โ๏ธ Best days
July and August deliver peak snow quality. Pacific storms bring dry, light snow that can last days on north and east-facing aspects. Mid-week days after a good snowfall offer the best conditions with smaller crowds. The altitude keeps temperatures below zero even on sunny days, preserving the snow in excellent shape.
๐ซ Days to avoid
Chilean winter school holidays (second half of July) saturate the resort with long lift queues and sky-high accommodation prices. August weekends, when Santiago residents head up en masse, also see heavy congestion. South winds (viento blanco) can close the high-altitude lifts.
๐ก Community tip
Buy your lift pass online in advance for better rates and to skip ticket queues. Combined passes cover La Parva and El Colorado for those wanting to explore all three valleys. Staying in Santiago and taking the daily shuttle is far more cost-effective than on-resort hotels. Don't miss the off-piste in the Tres Puntas sector: accessible with a guide and with fresh snow it is extraordinary.
