🏔️ History
Valloire is a picturesque, traditional French village located at the foot of the legendary Col du Galibier cycling pass. Linked with neighboring Valmeinier, it forms the extensive "Galibier-Thabor" ski area (160 km of pistes). It has retained an authentic village charm that sets it apart from the purpose-built concrete mega-resorts typical of the Savoie region.
☀️ Best days
February and March. A large majority of the ski area sits above 2,000 meters (topping out at 2,600m), ensuring excellent snow quality and long, sun-drenched ski days across its wide-open valleys.
🚫 Days to avoid
French school holidays (February), particularly around the lower bottlenecks connecting Valloire village to the main mountain, which can become heavily congested at the start and end of the day.
💡 Community tip
Make sure to ski over to the Gros Crey sector in Valmeinier for long, wide-open pistes perfect for sunny carving. If visiting in January, Valloire hosts a world-renowned international ice and snow sculpture competition in the village streets—an absolute must-see. For a local culinary treat, try the traditional Savoie "diots" (sausages) in the village restaurants.

🚗 Main access: From France, take the A43 motorway towards Turin (or from Italy via the Fréjus tunnel). Take exit 29 "Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne / Valloire" and then follow the D902 departmental road. You will drive up the famous Col du Télégraphe pass before descending slightly into the Valloire valley.
⚠️ Road closures: The Col du Galibier pass (located just above Valloire) is closed entirely during the winter. You cannot access Valloire from the south (Briançon/Grenoble) via this pass; you must always enter from the north (Maurienne Valley).

💡 Intra-resort shuttles: To get around between your accommodation, the village center, and outlying hamlets like Les Verneys or Les Choseaux, Valloire provides a highly efficient network of free buses that run continuously throughout the day.
