🏔️ History
Velika Planina is more than a ski area; it is a unique alpine plateau hosting one of Europe's largest and best-preserved traditional shepherd settlements, defined by its historic shingle-roofed wooden huts. Ski development began in the 1960s with the construction of the cable car, weaving slopes into a fairytale pastoral landscape.

☀️ Best days
Sunny winter days in January or February with deep snow cover. Skiing among the snow-draped traditional wooden cottages provides a magical visual experience, perfect for those prioritizing scenery and a relaxed, slower pace.

🚫 Days to avoid
Foggy days, as the open, treeless plateau has very few visual markers, making navigation difficult and disorienting. Days with insufficient snow when trails cannot be groomed or strong gusty winds should also be avoided.

💡 Community tip
Consider booking an overnight stay in one of the traditional shepherd huts adapted for tourists—the silence of the plateau after the last cable car leaves is magical. Eat at the famous Zeleni Rob restaurant to taste authentic cottage cheese "štruklji" and local Trnič cheese.
