About the resort
🏔️ History
Whistler opened in 1966 with aspirations to host the Winter Olympics, while neighboring Blackcomb opened in 1980, initiating a fierce rivalry. In 1997, the two mountains merged, and in 2008, they were physically connected by the record-breaking Peak 2 Peak Gondola. In 2010, the resort hosted the alpine skiing events for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Mid-week days in February provide the best combination of deep snowpack, cold temperatures, and longer daylight hours. Powder days are spectacular in the alpine bowls.
🚫 Days to avoid
Canadian holiday weekends (like Family Day in February) and the Christmas-New Year period, when lift queues at Whistler Village base can stretch past an hour.

Start at the Creekside base rather than the main Whistler Village to find free parking and bypass the morning village queues. Use the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to switch mountains in just 11 minutes without descending to the valley.

🚗 Sea-to-Sky Highway driving: Access from Vancouver is via the Sea-to-Sky Highway (BC-99 North). It is a highly scenic, winding mountain highway subject to severe winter storms. Winter tires (M+S or mountain-snowflake rating) are a legal requirement from October 1 to April 30.
