About the resort

🏔️ History
Created in 1940 by the City of Denver to provide winter recreation for its citizens, Winter Park is one of Colorado's oldest continuously operating resorts. Its profile expanded significantly in 1975 with the development of the Mary Jane territory, which became legendary for having some of the most challenging mogul runs in North America and preserving a rugged, local vibe.

☀️ Best days
Wednesdays and Thursdays following fresh snowstorms are ideal for avoiding crowds. Sunny spring days are perfect for skiing the legendary bumps on the Mary Jane side.

🚫 Days to avoid
Saturdays and Sundays, when the Winter Park Express ski train arrives from Denver and traffic on Berthoud Pass reaches its peak weekly congestion.

💡 Community tip
Park at the Mary Jane base lot (which is free) rather than the main Winter Park Village parking structures. For late-season snow, the glades in the Vasquez Ridge territory hold cold snow longer than other faces.

🚗 Mountain pass access: Take I-70 West to Exit 232 (Empire), and climb US-40 West over Berthoud Pass (11,307 ft / 3,447 m). The pass features sharp switchbacks and steep drops. It frequently closes during heavy storms for snow removal and avalanche mitigation.

Local Tips

💡 Stress-free train travel: Booking the Winter Park Express ski train is highly recommended to completely bypass the weekend traffic on I-70 and the mountain pass driving over Berthoud Pass during storm cycles.
