About the resort
🏔️ History
The combination of the family-friendly Schmittenhöhe mountain in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun offers one of Austria's most stunning visual backdrops: glacier skiing with direct views over a deep alpine lake. The Kitzsteinhorn, opened in 1965, was Austria's first glacier ski area and remains synonymous with guaranteed snow from October to early summer.
☀️ Best days
Late February and March. The sun reflects beautifully off Lake Zell, and the "Ski ALPIN CARD" allows you to seamlessly switch between relaxed, tree-lined cruising on the Schmittenhöhe and carving immaculate, cold glacier snow high up in Kaprun.
🚫 Days to avoid
The February school holidays (especially German and Dutch) and heavily overcast or foggy days. In bad weather, the exposed glacier (over 3,000m) suffers from brutal winds and whiteouts, driving massive crowds to the lower, more protected slopes.
💡 Community tip
Head to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier for high-altitude powder and freeriding (they have excellent marked freeride routes), but stick to the Schmittenhöhe on low-visibility days or when you crave traditional, cozy Austrian mountain huts. The "Top of Salzburg" viewing platform at 3,029m on the glacier is an absolute must-visit, even if you aren't skiing.
